Can I get a tax receipt for clothing donations to a charity?

Posted on August 7th, 2009 by admin

I have brand new clothing in boxes taking up space in my office that I would like to donate to a charity and am looking for one that might be able to give me a tax receipt. Any ideas?

I would keep the receipts, or at least copies of them, and even take photos of the clothes.

Legit charities should be able to give you a receipt for tax purposes. If the value is $250 or greater, you can have an issue as the IRS may want an "appraisal" or such, so I’d suggest parceling out donations for the value of around $200 and/or on multiple days. With pix and receipts, you should survive a challenge, but then you never know with the taxman.

Lots of charities out there–Goodwill, Salvation Army, animal shelters, and more tend to qualify and many have thrift shops which help support their work.

The "good will" around my house has an attended drop off area. It’s the only one around here that you can get a receipt. Do you have any salvation army thrift stores around your house? Maybe if you go in to one of the workers and ask them?

Most charity based organizations will give you a receipt. This will only help you on your taxes if you are able to itemize as it goes on schedule A.

Is this inventory? If so, check the IRS publications on how to report the fact you won’t be showing them as part of cost of goods sold.

Yes, they will give you a blank reciept when you ask for one.

It is your responsibility to determine the "fair market value" of your items for tax purposes.
