    Charity is a great business!

  2. steve0281 Says:

    That is an …
That is an excellent point! Certainly the panhandlers aren’t armed with credit card facilities. If they weren’t getting change, they wouldn’t be there. This might also point to the people from SF donating directly to people rather than through the middleman charity. Of course you would have to poll the people giving to the homeless there as to their politics.

  3. steve0281 Says:

    You are correct. …
You are correct. Many people are wary of charities for the reasons you cite. But why is not the same standard applied to government that performs much worse?

  4. americadashi Says:

    either way its …
either way its charity, we can’t force charity cause charity is volunteering. ah the burgeosie and proletariat.

  5. PlayerXT Says:

    Yes, “left and …
Yes, “left and right” politics are an oversimplification of what politics are, some people like libertarians can be fiscally conservertive while socially liberal and even saying that is an oversimplification of specific policies as if some people are politically in line with their personal beliefs, for example I personally do not like abortion as birth control but I would oppose measures to restrict a woman’s right to use abortion as birth control.

  6. AshillaBeige Says:

    Seriously, I’m a …
Seriously, I’m a small/no government-type, so this isn’t exactly coming from a modern liberal: learn how to argue. You sound like a paranoid right-wing dogmatist on crack. You’re embarrassing yourself.

  7. AshillaBeige Says:

    Churches aren’t …
Churches aren’t really charity in my book because too many spend their money on getting bullshit for themselves rather than helping the needy. At the same time, a church isn’t a conservative OR liberal institution. And seriously, don’t dehumanize people just because they’re wrong, or because you disagree with them. Conservatives lie – libertarians lie, etc. We’re humans, not red or blue. .. It’s that sort of mind set that leads to political genocide.

  8. AshillaBeige Says:

    Taxes aren’t …
Taxes aren’t charity, crazy. And I’m not a conservative in any way, but that was just stupid. Charity is voluntary last time I checked. Don’t try to use that nonsense. Taxes are payed under threat of government force. The only reason people in certain states pay more taxes is because they don’t want to be thrown in jail. Not exactly “charitable”. Still, I think people who feel the government is bad at helping people in general are more charitable, regardless of their political views.

  9. AshillaBeige Says:

    That’s incredibly …
That’s incredibly true. Also, Stossel seems to mean more people who are conservative politically/fiscally. I’m sure a lot of libertarians and anarchists are generous when it comes to a private charity. Why lump everyone into the usual political dichotomy. People tend to use their own definition of “liberal” and “conservative”, so Stossel should have defined his terms, and used a better study.

  10. Sonicisbadazz Says:

    This is a …
This is a fascinating video. My liberal side wants to object, but it can’t because there doesn’t seem to be any blatant agenda behind Stossel’s presentation here. (Or at least not MUCH of one. He DOES compare liberals and conservatives.) Not to say his study can’t be flawed, but I think it’s interesting. And that guy is right: EVERYONE has money they can give away.

  11. redraiders2K9 Says:

    I know right Turbo …
I know right Turbo tax Ghitener (bad spelling) doesn’t like to pay his taxes yet he runs the IRS. Thank you Obama you genius man you.

  12. PlayerXT Says:

    Thank you …
Thank you BrianRotMenacer, I agree that sometimes people can just be giving an opinion without pushing any agendas.

  13. BrainRotMenacer Says:

    I just want to …
I just want to congratulate PlayerXT on trying to be objective. As far as I can tell he was not trying to push forth any agenda; he was just saying “there are flaws with this study and it should be improved.” I wish more people were objectively and scientifically minded like this. Notice he also didn’t try to commit character assination by saying “John Stossel is an idiot” unlike USAGymnast immediately jumping in to say that PlayerXT is just a liberal that doesn’t like the study.

  18. ColostusRex Says:

    LOL you idiot! …
LOL you idiot! , man, I’ve known that libs fail to walk the walk for decades. You can run your yap all you want- LIBERALS LIE. My boss wrote OBAMA 08 on my car’s rear window. I put an N on it so it said NOBAMA. You wouldn’t BELIEVE the screams, yells, threats, horn-blowing and insults with which Obama supporters ailed me. You can’t defend your position without looking like a complete fool. ‘Church isn’t charity’ LOL. Mmm Hmmm. You have to give to a liberal institution for it to count, eh?

  20. AlexandrianDoctorate Says:

    Libertarians …
Libertarians traditionally promote both the necessity and effectiveness of private charity. That is, classical liberals such as John Locke, Voltaire, and the majority of our founding fathers did so. To be clear, classical liberalism is nothing like modern liberalism but is a specific form of culturally-driven libertarianism. Google it!

  21. Demian164 Says:

well you’re just a model human being arent you. done tooting your horn yet?

  22. kkliper Says:

    This is false …
This is false reporting by Stossel.

Brooks is including giving to the church as charitable giving, which doesn’t count because it’s not true charity, the giver gives to the church and receives the benefits of attending the church.

  23. Pilanus Says:

    Socially I am a …
Socially I am a libertarian, but Financially, I am very conservative. But I give 40% of my left over income (after paying bills, taxes, and necessities)

Sure I go out to eat from time to time, but for every $20 I spend eating out, I have given $40 to those in need. I rarely give to charity though, as I don’t care to pay for their administration costs.
