Can i claim donations to Goodwill on my taxes?

Posted on January 17th, 2010 by admin

i dropped off 2 large bags of clothes to Goodwill and got a receipt for it. Is there any way i can claim that on my taxes? how will the value of the clothes be determined?

You need to determine the thrift store value of the items. You can use TurboTax’s free online tool at http://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/itsdeductible/index.jsp. If the value is more than $500, you are going to have to file Form 8283. These charitable deductions can only count if you have enough other itemized deductions to make itemizing worthwhile.

will my reciepts from goodwill donations increase my tax refund?

I’m moving and wondering if you should take my extra stuff to goodwill or move it and have a garage sale this summer.

Your donations can make a little difference if you file long. Which is if you do itemized deductions. If your itemized deduction is more than the standard deduction, Use the itemized. Most people use the Standard. More than likely take the stuff with you and have a yard sale.

What’s your opinion about places like GoodWill and other thrift strores?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

I donate a small amount of clothes to Goodwill almost every year and a friend bought it to my attention that she didn’t believe it was a good idea because the Goodwill sells the clothes instead of giving them away.

My argument was that they also give you a receipt for tax purposes if you itemize your deductions every year.

But for some reason, I always thought they gave out charity donations to the homeless every year, am I right?

Goodwill is not really a charity that focuses on the homeless specifically. They’re more geared toward helping disadvantaged people find jobs. The money from donated materials typically goes toward job training and placement. I like what they do because it’s providing people with skills and jobs, so they can maybe one day be able to pay it forward. As far as taxes, all charities will give you a receipt for deduction itemization, so if you want to donate specifically to an organization that’s geared toward the homeless, you should.

Posted on November 15th, 2009 by admin

this year i want my 4y/o to pick out some gently used toys (she has soo many) to give to kids who may not get much.
but i don’t know where to take them??
goodwill will just sell them and i don’t want peole to have to buy them i want them givin away.
any ideas??
there is no orphange here either.

Local homeless shelters, or you can donate them to thrift stores, they will sell them too but at a hugely reduced cost. I think it’s great that you want to help and that you’re teaching your daughter to help. Good luck!

What does layering mean at Goodwill?

Posted on November 12th, 2009 by admin

I accidentally donated some items to Goodwill and I asked a team leader to see if they had it and they brought out the donation worker and said look in the "Layers" What does layers or layering mean at goodwill? Also do they actually have a warehouse that they put unwanted donations or do they just throw the stuff out?

Since they rack stuff according to the type of garment, it makes sense that they would pile the incoming garments according to type also. What happens to the garments between the initial sorting and the eventual racking I’ve no idea.

Who do you think "Mr. Goodwill" and "Mr Doodad Pro" really are?

Posted on November 4th, 2009 by admin

Mr Goodwill and Mr Doodad Pro gave a total of over $35K in donations to the Obama campaign in increments of $25, $50 over a few days. Who do you think these two contributors really are, since these names are obviously fake?

I’d like to know! More sleezy politics from the Dems.

Taxes – how do you figure how much your donations are worth?

Posted on October 26th, 2009 by admin

Is there somewhere online that is a good reference? For instance, if you donate 2 pairs of unneeded pants and sweaters to a Salvation Army or Goodwill center, how do you figure the value of them for your tax write-off? Is there a generic amount, or is it by the value of what that center sells it by? And do you need to prove how you came up with your numbers to the IRS?

Here’s a good general list:

When you make your donation, the receiving agency will give you a form to fill out.

Does Goodwill have a $500 per receipt rule for donation?

Posted on October 23rd, 2009 by admin

I went to Goodwill station to donate. The total is about $1200 after wards. At the end, the clerk gave me a receipt and had an inconspicuous smile on his face, "You can only deduction $500 per receipt", He said. "Oh, can I separate the receipt then", I replied. "NOPE.", and the Goodwill clerk briskly walked away. I actually feel cheated. My question is, is his claim correct? Am I only allowed to deduction up to $500 per receipt?

How in the world could you possibly donate $1200 worth of stuff to Good Will in one trip. I think you are vastly overestimating what you can use as the value of your donated junk.
