I would like to give some clothing to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, but don’t know who in this area is collecting food and clothing. Can you help?

Above posters are right about the probs with sending clothing.

Another free and easy idea is to collect Coke reward codes from bottles and cans and redeem them for donations to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief fund. Coke is also matching reward point donations on a 2-for-1 basis.

How Much Can I Claim for Clothing Donations and Not Trigger an Audit?

I have a big dollar amount to claim for clothing donations in 2009. What’s the highest I can I go as a percentage of AGI and not trigger any suspicion? The last thing I want is to get audited!

Keep in mind that to claim the donation you have to itemize your deductions. Is it enough to make itemized deductions higher than the standard deduction? I copied the following from www.irs.gov.

You must fill out Form 8283 (PDF), and attach it to your return, if your total deduction for all noncash contributions is more than $500. If you claim a deduction for a contribution of noncash property worth $5,000 or less, you must fill out Form 8283, Section A. If you claim a deduction for a contribution of noncash property worth more than $5,000, you will need a qualified appraisal of the noncash property and must fill out Form 8283, Section B. If you claim a deduction for a contribution of noncash property worth more than $5,000,000, you will also need to attach the qualified appraisal to your return.

Where can I send food and clothing donations for Haiti?

My school’s BSU is trying to start a clothing and food drive for those affected by the eartquake in Haiti, and the American Red Cross is only taking monetary donations. Where could I send the donations we collect? Or where could I find an organization that IS collecting food and clothing for the victims of the earthquake? I live in San Bernardino, CA, so I’m hoping for something super local (furthest we can go is Los Angeles). Best answer gets 10 points!!! Thanks in advance!

PLEASE… resist the urge and use your student brains to help avoid a "secondary disaster" in Haiti!

Your student group doesn’t have to go anywhere to help! Gather fellow students and read this article for more details about why organizations don’t want/need donations of food or clothing from the US. I bet some econ, international relations, sociology majors can lead a discussion. Then, hold a benefit–pass around an empty Starbucks cup and ask people to kick in the money they’d spend on one of their favorite drinks. Send it to the Red Cross or one of the international relief agencies from the link at the end of the article. College students aren’t rich, but your sacrifice of a latte or chai can really add up– and American dollars go pretty far in the developing world. Good luck!

Are there any clothing donation bins in Edinburgh?

I want to donate a few bags of clothes that are too small for me, but I can only do it today (Sunday) so I can’t take them to Oxfam etc. (I’m leaving monday morning)……
So how can I find clothing BINS (like how you recycle bottles).

Appalachian clothing donations?

I have some gently used clothing I am getting rid of and instead of donating to a local charity I would like to donate to an organization that will distribute them in Appalachian America. I am looking for an organization where I can send these items, I am willing to pay shipping. A website would be appreciated.

The people I’m seeking to help are senior citizens, and familes with limited incomes.

There is already help in many communities for people like that.
For food there are food-banks. Many of my elderly neighbors go to one in our community.
For clothing there is the Salvation Army Thrift Store. It’s less expensive than Goodwill. And they actually help people (give them free stuff) who qualify because of low income. The Salvation Army will also help with Christmas gifts. (for free).
And then there is of course the Government Assistance program, which will help people with Food Stamps and/or Cash. In my state they have to work at least 25 hours a week, if they can. If they cannot because of some disability, the government will still help them.
All those people need to do is go look for and where needed apply for the help that is available.
Maybe you could help them do that.
They can go to the Library and use computers there (If they don’t have any other access to a computer) to apply online for gov’t assistance, as well.

Goodwill, Salvation Army

Go to East 23 Street (South side of the Street), there are several second hand stores that will take your donations.
I think there is a Goodwill and and Salvation Army on the block.

Can you give clothing at just any salvation army location?

I typed in "salvation army" on google maps and found a few near me. But will all locations take clothing donations? (I’ve never donated to the salvation army before)

I’ve dropped bags off at several and they didn’t even ask what was in them. I don’t think it should be an issue. If you need to just call and ask :]

Not so we can donate to but to accept donations from others. Its for a local church Ministry.
This bin is going to be permamently outside…carboard wont do. I am refering like the Salvation Army, and Planet Aide clothing donation bins.

A lot of places like Goodwill and Salvation Army stopped putting those bins out because people used them as trash cans.

You might be better off with a cardboard bin inside somewhere. Or do a clothing drive a couple of times a year.
