What advice do you have for someone who wants to get rid of their car?

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by admin

My car is a ‘98 VW, 145k with a broken turbo. Until the turbo went out the car was working just fine. It’s not drivable right now . . . or drives "unsafely" at 25-30 mph.

CarMax, where I’m planning to buy my new car would not give much if anything for this car. I actually would like to have cash and the Kelley Blue book value is ~ $2500, but the current repairs are about ~$2300. I don’t plan or want to sink money into fixing the car.

I was thinking about asking the German auto shop where I’ve been having it fixed for the last decade if they’d be interested in buying it . . . maybe even if only for parts. LAST resort would be to have the car towed and donated. I really want a little bit of money for the car, so donation really isn’t a first option.

Any ideas on what to do with my broken down Passat???
Holy cow! I never thought about washing the title! Yowza! Thanks for telling me about THAT!!!!

If you donate the car to a 501c3 charitable organization., you will (if you itemize) get a $500 tax deduction.

A junkyard will pay you scrap value, which would be in the $100-175 range, depending on the current prices of scrap steel.

Someone at the shop may be interested in buying the car, to fix up and resell. If you do sell it to the shop, make sure that you fill in a buyer’s name on the title, rather then leaving it blank. That way you are protected from accident or other claims. Keep a copy of the assigned title to prove who you sold it to

It is what it is. If you junk it you’ll get near $200 with a clean title. The shop guy may do a little better. Be careful of buyers who buy only to get the title which will never get out of your name. They wash the title and put in new numbers to sell stolen cars.

list it on craigslist for 200.00
    or
find a similar car at a salvage yard with a good turbo ( salvage yard turbo probably 100-200.00)

Take it out on an empty bluff. It has to be a cloudy night, rain not required, ocean pounding the rocks a plus. Pack it full of magnesium, copper and steel shavings, firecrackers and gunpowder; TNT optional. Walk 80 yards away, light the fuse and start filming.

Hello Kitteh, I know exactly what you can do. List it on the nearest materials exchange forum in your area. Rather than just junk out a car which CAN be made to run with a bit of work by some one who may actually have a use for the vehicle. These exchanges tend to offer a credit for something that you may want at a later date. You would be surprised at some of the goodies that show up on those sites. There’s some pretty cool stuff that folks just want to get rid of. You can even list it for whatever you would like to get for it in cash, and leave it up to barter. Perhaps they may have something that you need and may save some cash that won’t have to be spent. Hey, it’s a thought, and every thing we can put off towards being just dumped onto Nature is a step in the right direction. If I can be of any further help, feel free to ask.

    Brightest Blessings,
