What are some charities that really need donations?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

I’m going to donate money to a charity, and I’m looking for one that is really in need of a donation. please give me a website(: All answers are appreciated!

Look around your community. Look for local organizations that will use your generous donation to really help people, and not pay wages and benefits. Or buy food with your money and donate it to the food pantry or a soup kitchen. Buy blankets and give them to the homeless or buy new toothbrushes and hair brushes and donate them to the local domestic abuse shelter. The need is great; the opportunities are endless

How thoroughly do blood donation centers check blood to ensure it is free of STDs and other diseases?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

Do they do the same kind of test that some people undergo when they visit the doctor to see if they suspect they have an STD? If you are infected, how soon will the blood center contact the infected donor?

They are very thouough

Is it illegal to ask for donations for a good cause?

Posted on December 29th, 2009 by admin

My name is Deborah. I am 18 years old and my friend and I want to start a charity to help the needy families in Tijuana, Mexico by asking for donations such as clothing, blankets, and food for the winter, which we would then distribute to the families as presents to help bring hope back into their lifes and spread the Christmas spirit. But we are not too sure wether this is illegal or not. If you or anyone you know happens to know wether it is or not, we would appreciate it if you’d let us know. Thank You.

You cannot start a charity until you are an adult; then there are lots of legalities. You can join an organization that is already in existence and then do fund raisers for them. That way, you are aligned with an established non profit and your donors can have their donations as tax deductions.
Please remember that there are many families in the US that can use your help too. Probably some in your own community.

To thos with plasma donation experience: does albuterol cause you to be deferred at all?

Posted on December 26th, 2009 by admin

Will a plasma donation center defer you for any length of time if you start taking albuterol? How long is the deferral?
Just to clarify, I’m referring to if you _alert_ the donation center about the albuterol, as you’re supposed to, will they then defer you. :-)

I never had any problems and i take albuterol on a regular basis.

How should I drop off donations to a family in need without offending them?

Posted on December 26th, 2009 by admin

I asked around for donations to a family with little kids who I know were having a hard time. I got an outpouring of support, and people gave a turkey, canned goods, toys for christmas, clothing, and gift cards. Great! The problem is, I never consulted the mom, and I don’t want to offend her. I had been planning to do a "drop and run", but there is too much valuable stuff to leave out front. How should I get this to her without offending her?

Just tell them what a special family they are and you want them to have the best.I think they’ll be so grateful that you’ve thought of them in this way and be relieved their children won’t starve.Well done you!

What advice do you have for someone who wants to get rid of their car?

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by admin

My car is a ‘98 VW, 145k with a broken turbo. Until the turbo went out the car was working just fine. It’s not drivable right now . . . or drives "unsafely" at 25-30 mph.

CarMax, where I’m planning to buy my new car would not give much if anything for this car. I actually would like to have cash and the Kelley Blue book value is ~ $2500, but the current repairs are about ~$2300. I don’t plan or want to sink money into fixing the car.

I was thinking about asking the German auto shop where I’ve been having it fixed for the last decade if they’d be interested in buying it . . . maybe even if only for parts. LAST resort would be to have the car towed and donated. I really want a little bit of money for the car, so donation really isn’t a first option.

Any ideas on what to do with my broken down Passat???
Holy cow! I never thought about washing the title! Yowza! Thanks for telling me about THAT!!!!

If you donate the car to a 501c3 charitable organization., you will (if you itemize) get a $500 tax deduction.

A junkyard will pay you scrap value, which would be in the $100-175 range, depending on the current prices of scrap steel.

Someone at the shop may be interested in buying the car, to fix up and resell. If you do sell it to the shop, make sure that you fill in a buyer’s name on the title, rather then leaving it blank. That way you are protected from accident or other claims. Keep a copy of the assigned title to prove who you sold it to

How can I get donations for software development through a blog? Is there a better way?

Posted on December 24th, 2009 by admin

How can someone get donations/funds for a software that will be offered free? I was told to create a blog and create incentives but i am so lost at this point.

All of the donations will go for developing the software but how do i get that across to people reading the site?

Is there a site out there that will help me get funds for the project?

What about finding angel investors, how to see if they are who they say they are or are they scammers?

That could be pretty tough – they have nothing to gain from it, and any donation isn’t tax deductible – why would they donate to YOU rather than somewhere else?

Angel investors, venture capitalists, hope to see some return on their investment.

Charities: what is the tax benefit of making donations? How does it work?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

Is it like you buy something for $25 and the organization in charge says you are actually buying from them products for $125 which they donate on your behalf and you end up spending $25 but obtain tax deductions for $125.
Is it how it actually works?
and if so, how and who gets those organizations authorized to make those arbitrary prices … or maybe prices are not that arbitrary, or there is something else I’m missing.

How are charity donations used for tax deductions. can you explain, please. Thank you.
well, there is nothing written on the receipt that says you have made a donation? how to prove it if an auditor comes? …and ovewrall, my question was from the point of view of a charity organization – they offer tax deductions to businesses – how they do this. what is the mechanism, how is the ‘math’ done?

Sounds like this is a cash contribution, and if that’s the case, then what your ACTUAL cash contributed to a legal charitable organization – 501(c)(3).

For example, if you contributed $100 to a charitable organization, then you’d be able to deduct $100.

By the way, from a tax standpoint, charitable contribution requires the use of itemized deduction, instead of normal standard deduction. So, the overall itemized deductions should only be used if it is higher than the amount of the standard deduction.

Sometimes your donation contain values of goods and services, these items you cannot deduct.

For example, if you contributed the same $100 as above, but $50 was for two tickets of an event. In this case you can only deduct $50 instead of $100.

As always, keep receipts of everything, as well as letters those charitable organizations send to you.

What do you call people who draw blood for plasma centers? are they called phlebotemists?

Posted on December 18th, 2009 by admin

i know venipuncture is drawing blood too. but what are the people who draw blood in plasma centers and blood donation centers called, and what type of degree do they have to work in that profession?

They are phlebotomists. I took a course on it a few years ago. Its a lot easier than you would think just about anyone can do it with a little training. They do have schools for training and you can volunteer your time at places like blood banks and also at a prison for experience. After a while you can go to work in labs and get paid for it.
